UAE tourism in 2024: A year of triumph and transformation
Take a look at key milestones, record achievements, and remarkable growth
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) tourism industry has seen significant expansion in 2024, marking a key milestone in the nation’s journey towards achieving the UAE Tourism Strategy 2031.
This year has been pivotal, with the sector not only recovering but also outpacing expectations, as evidenced by impressive statistics and new initiatives.
Leading the world
According to the World Economic Forum’s 2024 Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI), the UAE ranked first regionally and 18th globally. The UAE stands as a leader in the global tourism landscape, particularly in areas like air transport infrastructure, data provision, and travel services. The country also secured the second position globally in infrastructure and services, cementing its status as a major player in the sector.
Economic contribution
Tourism's contribution to the UAE's economy reached Dh236 billion in 2024, accounting for 12 percent of the nation’s GDP. This increase signifies a robust tourism-driven economy, showing the substantial role tourism plays in the country’s growth. The rise in tourism revenue is a testament to the success of strategic plans to attract international visitors.
Rising hotel revenues
Hotel industry revenues surged in 2024, with establishments generating Dh33.5 billion during the first three quarters, up by 4 percent from the same period last year. The growth in hotel revenues reflects the overall optimism within the sector, as tourists flock to the UAE’s luxurious offerings. Hotel occupancy rates also rose to 77.8 percent, one of the highest globally, demonstrating the continued appeal of the emirates to international travellers.
Record passengers
Airports across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah saw record-breaking passenger numbers, exceeding 103 million by September 2024. With expectations of reaching around 150 million by year-end, this surge showcases the country’s appeal as a global hub for travellers.
The UAE’s airports have become central to the region's air transport network, further solidifying the nation's position as a key player in global tourism.
National Tourism Charter
A significant development in the UAE's tourism landscape this year was the launch of the "National Tourism Charter," a key element of the UAE Tourism Strategy 2031. This initiative aims to unite national efforts towards sustainable tourism development. It includes a focus on Emiratisation, providing job opportunities for UAE nationals in the sector and enhancing the nation's global competitiveness.
Focus on Sustainability
One of the standout campaigns of 2024 was the fifth season of the "World’s Coolest Winter" initiative, focusing on "Green Tourism." In partnership with the Ministry of Economy and the National Agricultural Centre, the campaign highlights sustainable agriculture and promotes tourism to local farms and agricultural projects. This drive aligns with the UAE's ongoing efforts to marry tourism with environmental responsibility, ensuring long-term sustainable growth.
